Bug Engine Removal
You can ignore this page, I'm just using it to help me remove my engine from my bug.
- Remove all wires with labels to say where they go
- Remove the breast plate around the pulley wheel
- Undo the throttle cable
- Clamp and disconnect the fuel line by the gearbox
- Undo the 2 lower M10 nuts at the bottom of the bell housing
- Undo the upper M10 bolt by the clutch cable arm... its a pig to get to so;
- Put the bug on stands
- get a ratchet with a 17mm socket on a decent extension bar and with your head under the diff reach around with the ratchet in your left hand over the drivers side of the box and with your right hand locate the bolt...
- Now the tricky bit;
- put the bug back on the floor (remove the stands)
- Behind the right hand side of the fan housing is the last M10 17mm nut. you will need a spanner not a socket.. a ratcheting spanner will be best. As you undo it the engine will lower by a few inches.
- Get a jack and placing the cup of the jack under the strainer plate lift it slightly and then pull the jack and engine towards the back of the car.. don't think you can leave the car up to remove the engine as it has to come off horizontally
- Lower the jack slowly still pulling but be careful not to catch the clutch plate on the box shaft.
- Once the jack is down get some bricks or wood blocks to allow you to get the engine off the jack... you want it on the floor.
- Then jack the car up as far as you can and remove it from underneath. you may want to slide it out sideways with the fan housing clearing the rear inner arch and wing
